Introduction
Hello and welcome to world of The Book of Sarah!
At its most basic level The Book of Sarah is the classic good versus evil story. It was initially meant to be a romance with no hint of a thriller or even any evil. It was meant to be about the tumult of going through sacrificing your lover over and over throughout time, and how two people battle back from the difficulties this would inevitably create for the person left behind. It was inspired by a comment made at my son’s school Easter Chapel Service in 2022 about Mary Magdalene discovering Jesus at the resurrection. I remember sitting there, getting lost in my thoughts thinking – what would that be like? What if she had been in love with Jesus, and he with her, and she was seeing the man she loved, the man she thought had been killed, suddenly standing in front of her. How would that feel? The idea started to take root and was cemented that evening while I was idly watching the film version of Dan Brown’s Inferno where the protagonists have to say goodbye to each other as one makes the ultimate sacrifice. Again, I was struck by the thought – what would it be like to knowingly hold onto the person you love before they sacrificed their life for the cause they believed in? And the first line (in that version!) of the book came to me.
I started to sketch out the ‘romance’, planning what it was going to be about when I found I was actually starting to write it. And very soon it became apparent it wasn’t a traditional romance at all when the idea of Judd popped into my head as I wrote. Then it became clear it was going to be a trilogy not a standalone book. It literally evolved in front of my eyes.
The characters took on a life of their own with two of them – Nate and Simon – introducing themselves to me and demanding to be more important to the books than I had envisaged! And other characters decided to enter this universe as well, who I was glad to welcome in but wasn’t always sure what their purpose was. Until it would slowly start to show itself!
If I am honest, I think the books become darker than I had thought myself capable of writing with a message about life that I didn’t even know I had inside me. The passion with which my characters put forward their – sometimes controversial – views has shocked me and challenged some of my own thinking. For the reader, I think the choice is yours whether you take on board some of the deeper messages or not. I hope you give them some consideration, but you are equally welcome to leave them at the door if you wish.
I have loved every moment of writing these books, and I hope you enjoy reading them just as much.
